Roskam visits local hospital to promote innovation
Washington, D.C. — Representative Peter Roskam (R-IL), Chairman of the Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, recently visited with Northwestern Medicine to learn more about their Neuroscience Services and view their Mobile Stroke Unit. This innovative unit is a specialized ambulance equipped with tools and staff that allow the team to quickly diagnose a stroke on site and immediately begin treatment. This Mobile Stroke Unit is the first of its kind in Illinois and one of nine units nationwide.
“Every minute saved in treating a stroke patient decreases disability and improves survival. The Mobile Stroke Unit is a quantum leap in stroke care. We are truly bringing the hospital to the patient,” said Harish Shownkeen, MD, medical director of the Stroke and Neurointerventional Surgery Programs at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital. “Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital is grateful for Rep. Peter Roskam’s support and understanding in the importance of bringing this service to our community.”
Congressman Roskam led a letter to The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Verma encouraging CMS to implement recent policy provisions that would expand coverage of telestroke services, specifically services such as Mobile Stroke Units.
“Mobile Stroke Units offer promising technology to reduce time between stroke and critical clinical intervention. Innovation like this can literally save lives, leading to better patient outcomes and reducing cost within the Medicare Program,” said Chairman Roskam. “I’m encouraged to see innovation like this occurring in my home district and I look forward to working with Northwestern and supporting their medical innovation.”
