Roskam statement on Sterigenics plant in Willowbrook
West Chicago, IL – Representative Peter Roskam (IL-06) released the following statement on reports of toxic gas at the Sterigenics plant in Willowbrook, IL:
“The situation in Willowbrook involving the Sterigenics plant is very concerning. We have a responsibility to ensure the public is protected from potential environmental hazards such as this, but also to address the situation calmly and quickly without inciting unnecessary panic.
"When reports began to surface about this dangerous gas, my office was quickly in communication with Willowbrook Mayor Frank Trilla and since then, my staff and I have been in contact with the Illinois EPA and the Region 5 U.S. EPA in addition to Mayor Trilla.
“No one should have to feel helpless to protect themselves or their families. Mayor Trilla’s quick handling in the wake of these reports has reassured residents that their safety is of the utmost priority and I commend him for his leadership. I will continue to work with the EPA and other federal authorities to ensure that Mayor Trilla and the residents of Willowbrook have the resources that they need to address this hazard and protect the families that live there.”
