Roskam releases statement urging thoughtful action on tariffs
Washington, D.C. — Representative Peter Roskam (R-IL) released the following statement encouraging the Administration to take a more thoughtful approach in regards to U.S. policy on tariffs:
“The U.S. economy is booming. By passing the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and scrapping burdensome regulations we have brought our economy to new heights. Our focus must continue to be increasing economic growth and bringing more jobs back to the U.S. I’m not convinced that widespread tariffs on steel and aluminum will help achieve these goals. In fact, tariffs applied too broadly could hamper our economy by raising costs for consumers. We need to go after the bad actors dumping steel on our shores, while also guaranteeing that countries who are playing fair are not wrongly punished.
“Additionally, numerous companies from my district are forced to import certain types of steel due to the lack of domestic supply. I urge the Administration to ensure that these companies are not unfairly harmed through overly-broad tariffs. They must also guarantee a robust and fair exemption process designed to exclude products before new tariffs take effect, not after the fact. Those cheating us in trade should pay the price, hardworking Americans and local manufacturers shouldn’t.”
