Roskam releases statement on passage of anti-Semitism bill
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S Congressman Peter Roskam (IL-06), co-Chair of the Bipartisan Taskforce for Combating anti-Semitism, released the following statement on the passage of H.R. 1911 – the Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism Act.
“Tragically, anti-Semitism is on the rise across the globe. The bipartisan Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism Act reinforces our nation’s leadership in fighting this scourge by elevating the position of Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism to the rank of Ambassador and ensuring that the Special Envoy is solely focused on this important task.
“History teaches us that anti-Semitism is defeated only when it is confronted directly. The Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism Act is a strong step forward as Congress seeks to defeat global anti-Semitism.”
The bill specifically enhances the position of Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism in the following ways:
- Upgrades the position of Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism to the rank of Ambassador, reporting directly to the Secretary of State.
- The Special Envoy must specifically focus on anti-Semitism is barred from handling another portfolio of issues.
- The bill highlights that the Special Envoy should be an individual of recognized distinction in the field of combating anti-Semitism or on protecting religious freedom.
- Clarifies that Special Envoy shall be the primary advisor and coordinator for U.S. government efforts to monitor and combat anti-Semitism abroad.
