Roskam Meets with Team Representing Russian Political Prisoner Mikhail Khodorkovsky
Earlier today, Rep. Peter Roskam, Chief Deputy Whip, met with the legal team representing Mikhail Khodorkovsky, an imprisoned Russian dissident recognized as a prisoner of conscience by human rights organizations.
Khodorkovsky has been an active leader of the democratic opposition in Russia, pushing for greater transparency and accountability for Russia's publicly traded companies, and challenging President Vladimir Putin's restrictive rule.
He is widely seen as the victim of a politically-motivated prosecution by the Russian government. Just last week he was sent back to prison to serve another six-year sentence, after another dubious trial.
"As the Obama administration continues its efforts to 'reset' relations with Russia, the United States Congress can and must press for progress on democracy and rule of law in Russia," said Congressman Peter Roskam. "Congress is considering legislation with bipartisan support that would impose targeted sanctions on Russian officials complicit in human rights and rule of law violations like the murder of Sergei Magnitsky, a lawyer working to uncover official corruption, and businessmen like Khodorkovsky. I plan to support such legislation and work to see it become law."
