Roskam, Bipartisan Taskforce for Combatting Anti-Semitism Applaud Decision to Cancel Hóman Statue

Dec 22, 2015
Press Release

WASHINGTON – Today, the Co-Chairs of the Bipartisan Taskforce for Combatting Anti-Semitism released a statement after the announcement of the cancelation of construction of a statue in Székesfehérvár, Hungary memorializing Bálint Hóman, a known anti-Semite and Nazi-collaborator. On December 4th, 2015, the Co-Chairs sent a joint letter to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán urging him to intercede and cease construction of the Hóman statue. The Co-Chairs are U.S. Reps. Chris Smith (NJ-04), Nita Lowey (NY-17), Eliot Engel (NY-16), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL-27), Kay Granger (TX-12), Steve Israel (NY-03), Peter Roskam (IL-06), and Ted Deutch (FL-21).

“We have learned through Hungary’s Embassy in Washington that the civil-society organization responsible for the Hóman statue has canceled the project. We applaud this decision and hope it serves as a reminder that the history of the Holocaust must be neither revised nor forgotten and the memory of the millions of victims must never be disrespected. We are also pleased by the advocacy of the U.S. government, as well as many U.S. civil-society organizations, in conveying America’s principled and unambiguous stand against anti-Semitism and objecting to the plans for constructing the statue.”

Hungary’s government provided the majority of funds for a local statue honoring Bálint Hóman, a wartime political leader whose actions led to the near destruction of Hungary’s Jewish population during the Holocaust. On December 4, 2015, the Co-Chairs of the Bipartisan Task Force for Combatting Anti-Semitism sent a letter to Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán urging him to publicly condemn Hóman’s role in the persecution and deportation of innocent Hungarians and to withdraw government funding for the construction of the statue.
