Rep. Roskam Leads IL GOP Delegation in Urging Governor Rauner to Veto Dangerous Abortion Bill

Sep 27, 2017
Press Release

Today Congressman Roskam (IL-06) penned a letter  which was signed by his Illinois pro-life colleagues asking Governor Rauner to veto HB 40. “This bill is dangerous.” Roskam said, “It forces taxpayers to be complicit in the act of abortion even if they believe abortion to be morally reprehensible. Lawmakers in Springfield should be focused on addressing Illinois’ current financial crisis and not on partisan politics that serve only to place a greater burden on Illinois taxpayers. I am asking the Governor keep his commitment to protect taxpayers as well as the most vulnerable members of our community.”

· House Bill 40 expands Medicaid coverage for all abortions. There is no cap on the number of abortions that could be covered under Medicaid and no cap on the amount of taxpayer dollars that could be spent on these procedures.

· Taxpayers could be on the hook for approximately 30% of all the abortions performed in Illinois per year. According to figures from Department of Healthcare and Family Services, the current rate for the cost of an abortion covered by Medicaid to the State is approximately $1,449. Based on statistics from Medicaid and this current rate, Illinois could spend over $21 million on abortion procedures annually.
