Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  Today, Congressman Peter Roskam (IL-06) issued the following statement after Her Excellency Park Geun-hye, the President of the Republic of Korea, addressed a Joint Meeting of Congress:

"The United States and Korea are important partners in a strategic alliance rooted in a shared history.  My father, a Korean War veteran, has recalled how devastated Korea was when he left Seoul 60 years ago.  Today, Korea stands on the world stage as a remarkable example of the benefits of freedom, and in stark contrast to the North.  A dynamic economy, a nation having moved from a global aid recipient to now being a donor nation, and the first elected female head of state from northeast Asia are all evident markers of the Korean success story.

"My dear wife, Elizabeth, has painted a series of paintings of the Capitol dome.  I was very pleased to convey to President Park the 'Harvest Dome' to commemorate her address to Congress.  This painting in particular I believe is a fitting marker to reflect on what has been reaped through our alliance from the seeds first sown on the battlefield 60 years ago.  Through our continued work together around the themes President Park articulated today, we can look forward to a future of shared prosperity and security built on the foundation of the last six decades of our alliance."
