Congressman Peter Roskam

Representing the 6th District of Illinois

Ending Human Trafficking

As many as 25,000 women and children in our area are forced into the commercial sex trade each year. Tragically, 2/3 of victims are forced into prostitution by age 18. Chicagoland is now the 5th largest location for human trafficking in the U.S.

As a member of the Congressional Human Trafficking Task Force, I organized a regional human trafficking roundtable this past August in conjunction with Naomi's House, Administer Justice, the West Chicagoland Anti-Trafficking Coalition, International Justice Mission, the Salvation Army and other leaders.

I have also helped pass these bipartisan bills in Congress:

  • The Frederick Douglass Trafficking Victims Prevention and Protection Act which provides additional resources to prevent human trafficking, protect victims, and prosecute traffickers. (HR 2220)
  • The Enhancing Detection of Human Trafficking Act which trains Labor Department officials on how to spot - and stop - the illegal trade of people. (HR 2664)
  • Put Trafficking Victims First Act which trains U.S. prosecutors how to investigate and process cases where a victim has suffered trauma and ends the practice of labeling victims of human trafficking as "prostitutes". (HR 2473)
  • Improving Support for Missing and Exploited Children Act which updates best practices at the state and local level in coordination with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. (HR 1808)

It is more important than ever that the federal government support the efforts of these groups, and local law enforcement to put an end to human trafficking.

To get help or report a potential human trafficking situation:

Illinois Department of Child & Family Services: 800.252.2873 - Protects children through the investigation of suspected abuse or neglect by parents and other caregivers.

National Human Trafficking Resource Center: 888.373.7888 - Serves victims and survivors of human trafficking and the anti-trafficking community in the United States.”

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is designed to get our economy growing and increase take home pay for hardworking families.  It will do just that.  The status quo of the tax code is indefensible, and we have the opportunity of a lifetime to seize this reform.  Our tax code is a self-imposed weight dragging on our economy, and we have the power to change it.
