Combating the Opioid Crisis
To stop the spread of opioid abuse, I hosted an Opioid Round Table in cooperation with healthcare providers, police, firefighters, psychological service providers, recovery specialists, prosecutors, and the coroner's office. We discussed the challenges facing our communities and strategies for combatting the opioid epidemic.
I have also helped pass these bipartisan bills in Congress:
- The 21st Century Cures Act (HR 6), which was signed into law and dedicates $4.8 billion in new funding to the National Institutes of Health for opioid prevention and treatment programs. The Cures Act also includes $16 million in prevention, treatment, and recovery services here in Illinois.
- The Synthetics Trafficking & Overdose Prevention Act (HR 1057), which requires new security and screening procedures for imported packages by Customs and Border Protection.
- The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (S 524), which was signed into law and increases funding for prevention and treatment programs by $150 million. It also makes naloxone more widely available to first responders to reverse overdoses and save lives.
- The INTERDICT Act (HR 2142), which provides Customs and Border Protection enhanced chemical screening devices and scientific support to detect and intercept fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.
